Brazil officials confiscated 39 kg of caramel spread from Uruguay’s football team for World Cup, 2014. The Uruguay spread called dulce de leche was confiscated citing that it was a milk product which was bought in without the required sanitary documentation.
The spread was seized as the team landed at Confins airport. Brazilian authorities have however assured that the team would be given back the spread as soon as it produces the required official documents. It is not clear whether the spread was made available to the players.
Uruguay players said that this was not the first time they were carrying the spread with them. The team claimed that it had taken the spread to the World Cup in South Africa where they were cleared by the customs to carry the spread. The popular spread is widely used with pancakes, biscuits, bread and ice-creams. It is prepared with milk, baking powder, sugar and vanilla extract.
